Description of Single Jersey Fabric

Jersey is the most common knit fabric used for t-shirts, tank tops – simple knit tops. It was originally made of wool but now made with cotton and synthetic fibers. This fabric was first produced in Jersey island off the coast of France, hence the name. The fabric is warm, flexible, stretchy, and very insulating, making it a popular choice for the layer worn closest to the body. The following types of jersey are common: single jersey, double jersey, interlock jersey and jacquard jersey. This fabric has a right side and a wrong side. The right side of the material is marked by a series of very small lines that run vertically, and the wrong side has a horizontal grain. In most cases, a garment made from jersey fabric is sewn with the right side facing out, unless the seamstress is making a deliberate stylistic choice.
