Sustainable Garments – The Fashion Revolution - Organic Cotton – Recycled Cotton

If we are to see any major changes towards a Sustainable Future, our cultural attitudes surrounding the fashion that we consume and dispose of needs to change.

Today, there is a growing awareness about the lifestyle factors that are linked to pollution and climate change. These include the consumption of animal products and the usage of plastics. However, there remains another factor that needs attention that is vital in ensuring a truly sustainable future: the fashion industry and our ferocious appetite for constant clothing consumption.

The environmental costs of clothing production are immense. Devastating amounts of water is needed to grow cotton, the pesticides used to speed up the rate of growth are harmful to the land and to human health and factories belch out toxic chemicals from clothing dyes. The global activism movement focusing on Sustainable fashion / Sustainable Clothing / Sustainable Garment, Fashion Revolution, has reported that the fashion industry is responsible for 20 per cent of global water pollution. This makes rivers, lakes and seas in countries of production extremely harmful to the surrounding inhabitants and ecosystems… etc.

That’s when the sustainable garment raises. Organic Cotton is made in agricultural production, organic fertiliser, biological control of pests and diseases, natural farming management, no use of fertilisers and pesticides, from seeds to agricultural products all natural pollution – free production. Organic Cotton – Recycled Cotton – Botanic Dye, they’re all considered as the Important Sustainable factors in this Sustainable Garment future process.

Sustainable Garments – Organic Cotton and Botanic Dye

We started buying melange and organic cotton yarn from India to produce fabric for our clients who need a reliable sustainable garments factory in Vietnam.

Thanks to the wave of new yarn and textile mills preparing for TPP’s yarn-forward rules, there are more options for sustainably produced fabric in Vietnam. One of the choices is Bros Vietnam.

We were excited when Bros team showed us their new catalogue of botanically dyed melange yarn at the end of 2019. Below is the catalogue and information. Using their yarn, our Sustainable Garments Factory in Vietnam can produce Eco friendly garments for your brand.

“Grass and wood dyeing” also is known as the botanic dyeing. Natural dyestuffs are extracting from flowers, plants, shells, fruits, leaves, and etc. They are safe dyestuffs, skin friendly, natural coloring, fragrant, soft, etc.

At present, BROS selects a series of plant dyes made from waste materials such as chestnut shell, mulberry, Indigowoad Leaf and etc. Bros focuses to combine the “Eco” and “Natural” together, so the botanical dyed heather also applicable in organic cotton. Bros researched and developed a stable dyeing method to make the botanic dyestuff been absorbed in the fiber evenly, so the colors are the same as our normal heather, but have the Eco and Natural value.

Botanic dyestuffs are with the natural color tone, natural fragrance, this unique characters are favored by the consumer all over the world. Most Botanic dyestuffs have medicinal effect, such as anti-bacterium, reducing inflammation, improving the blood flow, and make the life safer and healthier.

Nowadays, Eco-friendly, Go Green has become a hot topic and important for a social life, more and more strict policy is announced as to protect the environment. Botanical dyed heather is the best choice for baby’s wear, underwear, pajamas and other intimate clothing.
Go Green with botanical dyed yarns also has its price. There are Points for Attention with Botanical Dyed Melange Yarns that Bros brought to our attention.
Points for Attention:
1. Mild washing conditions should be adopted when washing. Because the color fastness of botanic dyes is relatively poor, some of them will be color changing when exposed to high temperature, acid, alkali, oxidant, reducing agent, bleaching agent, metal ions, etc., it is recommended to use softening deionized water when washing, temperature neutral detergent and appropriate amount of softener. Wash separately from other darker colors to avoid color staining.

2. Our technical data sheet is based on the data of fastness testing under basic. Washing conditions. It is only for reference and does not constitute the basis for disputes in bulk ordering. At present, The color difference is relatively larger than normal.

3. If customers need to buy organic cotton mélange yarn, please bring up specially when inquiring price.

4. The botanic dyes have strong seasonality, and the stock is not always available, so it is necessary to communicate with the salesman in advance.

5. Five pieces of botanic dyes have been applied and more will be introduced in the future.

Then, another interest development came when my company resumed working after Tet at the beginning of February 2020. A customer in the US emailing me to look for a factory that produces 100% recycled cotton T-shirts using organic or botanic dyes. His quantity is less than the MOQ of Bros. Challenged by his suggestion of “We will dye the fabrics ourselves in the US unless you recommend a dye house that does botanical washes”.

And here it comes, on February 19, 2020, I have a few garments with botanic dye by cooperating with the local wash house. We tried Blue Pea Flowers and Gardenia for botanic dye on the garments as in the below picture. This can help the customers who would like to buy botanic dye garments and can’t meet the MOQ of botanical dyed melange yarns.

Recycled cotton: Recycled cotton’s fiber is obtained by purchasing the remaining fabric cut by the fabric factory or garments manufacturer and then spun. Can achieve the purpose of waste reuse.

Sustainable Garments – The purpose of waste reuse – Recycled Cotton

In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards buying second-hand clothing, rather than always turning to the high street. Big names in the fashion industry have also been raising the issue of sustainable and ethical clothing. Despite this growing public interest in Sustainable Garment, the continuous and regular consumption of new clothes still remains.

Fashion giants are responding, too. By 2025, Zara pledges to only use organic, sustainable or Recycled Cotton, linen and polyester to make its clothing. H&M (HMRZFpromises to do similar by 2030.
