Description of Rib Fabric

Clearly defined repeating lines make it easy to identify rib fabric. Rib fabric uses a basic stitch on weft knitting machines that require two sets of needles operating at right angles to each other. Rib knits have a lot of elasticity and are commonly used for sleeve bands, neckbands, and sweater waistbands. Lightweight sweaters in rib knits provide a close, body-hugging fit similar to Ponte Roma but not as tight. Rib knits tend to be more durable and provide more stretch than jersey knitted fabrics.

Think back to that jersey T-shirt. The neck band is probably a rib knit. Rib is made by alternating knit and purl stitches to form ridges on both sides of the fabric.
